Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) students take the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) to become licensed, as it is specifically designed for osteopathic medical students, unlike the USMLE which is for MD students.

Key points about COMLEX and DO students:

  • Purpose: The COMLEX assesses a DO student’s knowledge of osteopathic medicine, including osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), which is not tested on the USMLE.
  • Who administers it: The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) administers the COMLEX.

Can DO students take USMLE?:

While not required, some DO students may choose to take the USMLE alongside the COMLEX to potentially increase their options for residency programs.
